Arizona made a late tuition payment to the three state universities last week, but continued to postpone a scheduled payment from the state general fund.
The Arizona Board of Regents said the state made a payment of $47 million in tuition fees that was due in late December, but did not make up December’s missed general fund appropriations.
The deferred payments include $35 million due to Arizona State University, $30 million to the University of Arizona, and $10 million to the University of Northern Arizona.
The tuition payments come from revenue turned over each semester by the schools. The state returns the lump-sum tuition revenue to the three universities each month, along with the funds appropriated in the budget by the Legislature.
The state has reduced budgeted expenditures for higher education by a total of $231.5 million in fiscal 2009 and 2010.
