A Louisiana state tax amnesty period that will begin Sept. 1 and continue through the end of October is expected to bring in approximately $150 million.
The Department of Revenue said some 340,000 taxpayers owe a total of $900 million in taxes, not including penalties and interest. The delinquent list includes 242,000 individuals and 96,000 businesses.
The state collected almost $200 million in a similar program in 2001.
A new state law allocates the first $98 million in amnesty collections to coastal protection and restoration, with the next $86 million flowing into the budget stabilization fund. Any additional revenue would go into the general fund.
