Residency Lawsuit Against Hawaii Rep. Say Dismissed

LOS ANGELES — A circuit court judge dismissed a challenge to former Hawaii House Speaker Calvin Say's residency.

In her Sept. 30 ruling, First Circuit Court Judge Karen Nakasone sided with Say's attorneys, who argued that only the House of Representatives can decide whether lawmakers meet the requirements to serve.

Ramona Hussey and five other voters in Palolo's House District 20 claimed in the lawsuit that Say doesn't live in the area that the Democratic legislator has represented since 1976. Say's wife, Cora, owns a house in a neighboring district, which the voters claim is Say's actual residence.

In a statement, Say said he is a lifelong resident of Palolo and that hopefully the ruling will put a conclusion to the debate.

Say is running for re-election in District 20 against Republican Julia Allen and Green Party candidate Keiko Bonk.
