Title: City Treasurer/Deputy Director
Firm: City of Charlotte, North Carolina
Age: 39
Matthew Hastedt has been with the city of Charlotte for more than 10 years and currently serves as city treasurer/deputy director, supervising the cash and investment team as well as leading the finance department's debt management and capital financing efforts. The revenue division also reports to the city treasurer.
"What is exciting about this work is the sheer number of things in the city I get to touch. I am working on airports, water utilities, affordable housing projects and more. It's interesting and fun," said Hastedt.
Charlotte's investment portfolio is approximately $2.8 billion and its debt portfolio includes over $5.6 billion outstanding across various general obligation, revenue and appropriation and hospitality credits.
One area the city is focused on is investing in its corridors of opportunity, which are historically unfunded areas of Charlotte. The goal is not to displace residents, but to make the areas better for those living there. Hastedt is excited about this initiative. "There are so many opportunities to invest. We are also looking for ways to measure the impact of that and evaluate the level of improvement we can bring with public/private partnerships," said Hastedt.
Prior to his current role, he served as debt manager for two years, working with all departments across the city to secure their short- and long-term capital financing needs.
As city treasurer, Hastedt serves as an ex-officio board member for the Charlotte Firefighters' Retirement System. He was also named a trustee for the city of Charlotte's Employee Benefit Trust. He also serves as a mentor in the city's Shared Leadership Learning.
When Hastedt isn't busy with the city, you can find him training for marathons. He is currently training for the Chicago Marathon.
