Massachusetts Treasurer Names Five Deputies

Massachusetts Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, who took office Jan. 21, named five deputy treasurers.

Maureen Godsey Valente will oversee the Massachusetts School Building Authority, Clean Water Trust and debt management. Valente is a former Sudbury town manager for 15 years and was also a finance officer in Lexington and Concord.

James MacDonald will remain first deputy treasurer, a title he has held since 2010. MacDonald, who is also chairman of the Dedham Board of Selectmen, has worked for Massachusetts Treasury for 40 years.

Nicola Favorito, executive director of the Massachusetts State Employees Retirement system for 12 years, will stay in that capacity. He oversees the Treasury's defined contribution plans unit.

Kim Gainsboro will continue to serve as deputy treasurer and chairwoman of the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission. She has worked for the Treasury for 11 years and previously was deputy general counsel and assistant treasurer of human resources.

Previously, Goldberg also named Alayna Van Tassel, most recently chief of staff to House Committee on Post Audit and Oversight Committee Chairman David Linsky, as deputy treasurer and executive director of the Office of Economic Empowerment.

Favorito, Gainsboro and Van Tassel were sworn in Jan. 28 and MacDonald will do so later this week. Valente will begin in March.
