DALLAS — Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is leaving the law firm that bears his name to work for Greenburg Traurig, officials said.
Houston-based Bracewell & Giuliani — now rebranded as Bracewell — said that Giuliani's departure was amicable and took effect Jan. 19. The Houston-based firm will retain its New York office, according to managing partner Mark C. Evans.
Bracewell & Giuliani ranked third in 2015 among Texas bond counsel with $6.2 billion of deals and 13th in the U.S. The firm absorbed the public finance business of Vinson & Elkins in 2011.
"After a decade in which Rudy helped us build what is now a very successful and thriving New York office, we thank Rudy and wish him our very best," Evans said.
"Our New York office and our white collar practice will continue to have tremendous leadership through our long-time New York managing partner, Daniel S. Connolly, who joined the firm with Rudy in 2005, and has substantial prosecutorial experience."
At Greenberg, Giuliani will serve as global chairman of its cybersecurity and crisis management practice, the firm said.
"One of the main goals I had in joining Bracewell was to help the firm build a strong presence in the New York legal market," Giuliani said in prepared remarks. "By any measure, we have achieved that objective and I'm proud of the success the New York office has had and will continue to have.
"Bracewell is a great firm and although I will miss my friends and colleagues at the firm, it's time for me to move on to other challenges."
Also moving with Giuliani from Bracewell is Marc L. Mukasey, who will serve as global co-chair of the firm's white-collar defense practice. Mukasey, a former federal prosecutor, held a similar post at Bracewell.
Giuliani, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 2008, said the move "comes at a time when my practice and Greenberg Traurig's particular focus on cybersecurity and related counseling, investigations and litigation is an absolute match."
